Care Label Guide for Clothing Brands
Care labels are the small sewn-in labels that tell consumers how to wash, dry and care for a garment. This guide explains what they are, what information they commonly include, and how materials, printing, care symbols, artwork and sampling work in practice.
What Is a Care Label?
A care label is a fabric label sewn into a garment — typically at the neckline, side seam or waistband — that provides care instructions and product information. It is the part of the garment the consumer reads before washing, so it must remain legible and durable for the life of the product.
Requirements vary by destination market and product category. Before finalizing your label content, always confirm the rules that apply to your target markets and product types.
What Information Is Commonly Included?
Brand Name / Logo
Your brand identity, woven or printed on the label.
Fiber Composition
The percentage of each fiber used, such as 100% cotton or 60% polyester / 40% cotton.
Care Instructions
Washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional care instructions.
Country of Origin
Where the garment was manufactured.
Size / Style / SKU
Garment size, style number or SKU reference for identification.
Manufacturer ID / Registration Number
Supplier identifiers or registration numbers where required by the destination market.
Care Symbols
Care symbols are the international pictograms used on care labels. They communicate care instructions without language barriers:
Washing
Machine wash or hand wash, with temperature and cycle information.
Bleaching
Whether chlorine or non-chlorine bleach is allowed.
Drying
Tumble dry, line dry, drip dry or dry flat.
Ironing
Ironing temperature and whether steaming is allowed.
Professional Care
Dry cleaning and wet cleaning symbols with solvent and process details.
Symbols must be printed clearly and accurately, as incorrect symbols can lead to garment damage and consumer complaints.
